Návplion to Thira

The final leg of our trip to Greece, beginning in the Peloponnese at the first capital of modern Greece, then taking in the sites of ancient Mycenae and Corinth, and ending at the tourist-soaked but lovely island of Thira (a.k.a. Santorini).

Part II of our Hunan trip, this album features pictures of a 2000-year-old mummy's heart, ancient tombs and treasures, a giant lobster climbing the side of a building, and museums lovely and lowly. Don't miss it!

Museum Spree

As the year 2005 expired, so did our book of discount coupons for many of the museums and other sights in Beijing. So in the last days of the year we organized trips to as many museums as possible.

Summer Palace

The New Summer Palace is a complex of scenic buildings and bridges among lakes and hills. It was where the Imperial court would decamp to when it got too hot in the city. We were there when it was pretty cold, but it was still quite lovely.

Things from Outer Space!

A visit to the Ancient Observatory, the National Museum (with a *special appearance* of the Shenzhou 6 space capsule), and, best of all--a giant two-faced chicken.

Beijing's Nationalities Park

China's population is more than 90% Han Chinese; the other 10% is made up of many small ethnic groups. The Nationalities Park is a large Disney-like place dedicated to the celebration of China's multicultural diversity. As someone more clever than I described it, it's kind of like a zoo for minorities.

Interior of Mosque at Akrocorinth43 viewsAfter the Franks, the Turks took control of Akrocorinth in 1458. Their additions to the fortress included this mosque and a minaret. mudmine

Instruments on the observatory platform32 viewsYou can't get very close to these large instruments, but they're impressive nonetheless. At left is a sextant, used for measuring distances between celestial bodies, and at right a theodolite, used for measuring altitude. The signage at the observatory is minimal, so I'm relying on the web site of the Cumberland (MD) Astonomy Club for much of the information about the instruments. mudmine
Snail from Ia32 viewsWe visited the town of Ia, on the northern tip of the island, and found a garden there completly overrun (overslimed?) with snails.mudmine

Christine and Hilary with jungle vine43 viewsHilary's goofy look is a combination of the coolness of shorts with the leech protection of long underwear tucked into socks. You may laugh, but she did get away without any close leech encounters. Christine was not so lucky: she was viciously attacked by a leech just behind the knee that very morning. We're not sure how we got in her pants, whether he'd ben hanging around since the day before, biding his time, or snuck in as we were hiking.mudmine
Rowdy college students at Cuc Phuong40 viewsWe ran into this screaming, trash-scattering mob many times throughout the morning, to be greeted each time with shouts of "HELLO! MERCI! MERCI BEAUCOUP! HELLO!" Once, when we crossed them, they wanted us to take their photo, and then decided that they really wanted us to be in the photo with them.mudmine
