Part II of our Hunan trip, this album features pictures of a 2000-year-old mummy's heart, ancient tombs and treasures, a giant lobster climbing the side of a building, and museums lovely and lowly. Don't miss it!

Museum Spree

As the year 2005 expired, so did our book of discount coupons for many of the museums and other sights in Beijing. So in the last days of the year we organized trips to as many museums as possible.

Summer Palace

The New Summer Palace is a complex of scenic buildings and bridges among lakes and hills. It was where the Imperial court would decamp to when it got too hot in the city. We were there when it was pretty cold, but it was still quite lovely.

Things from Outer Space!

A visit to the Ancient Observatory, the National Museum (with a *special appearance* of the Shenzhou 6 space capsule), and, best of all--a giant two-faced chicken.

Beijing's Nationalities Park

China's population is more than 90% Han Chinese; the other 10% is made up of many small ethnic groups. The Nationalities Park is a large Disney-like place dedicated to the celebration of China's multicultural diversity. As someone more clever than I described it, it's kind of like a zoo for minorities.

Sunset in Halong Bay41 views... Finally, with the sunset organge fading from the horizon, we decided to go downstairs and join the others in the drinking. Even Hilary picked up a can of beer, just to be convivial. All the places at the main partying table were filled, but Hilary managed to squeeze in to help a Chinese couple join in the conversation, and I took my can of beer and my book and settled into another booth. There seemed to be lots of good cheer and laughter until the boat was approaching the dock, and the atmosphere seemed to chill and some voices became harshermudmine
The amazing mimosa II37 views...and here is the after: see how the one set of leaves has completely folded up and is now just a skinny stick? They fold up instantly on contact, and apparently re-open about half an hour later. The little purple bursts are the mimosa flowers.mudmine
False arch doorway to tomb34 viewsThe size of the stones used the construct these tombs is very impressive. mudmine

Empress Dowager Cixi's Marble steamboat35 viewsAs you can see, the marble boat features side-paddles and, perhaps, some sort of marble steam engine as well. Thus, in frittering away the navy's modernization money on this marble monstronsity, the Empress may have at least complied with the letter of the law used to raise the modernization funds, if not its spirit.mudmine
