"Rudy's been to Canada!"66 viewsThis might be my favorite picture from China yet. These kids were part of a huge herd from their school, waiting in a disorderly line to be let in small batches into the large maze that is one of the few things at Yuanmingyuan not in ruins. Seeing some foreigners standing quite near them, one of them offered me a small piece of candy, and then the girl with the tissue in her nose barged up to inform Hilary in excited Chinese that the kid on the left had been to Canada, a fact that he seemed kind of reluctant to own up to. Typical kid stuff, but this picture makes me laugh everytime I look at it. mudmine (1 votes)

Near the center of the world67 viewsBehind Jeremy is the spot in the Temple of Heaven where the emperor would talk to the gods once a year. According to our guidebook, it was considered the center of the earth. Everyone wants to get their picture standing on it, though, so it's hard to push your way on to it these days. We took a picture of Jeremy just in front of it. Bet the emperor never had to put up with this nonsense.mudmine (1 votes)
