Návplion to Thira

The final leg of our trip to Greece, beginning in the Peloponnese at the first capital of modern Greece, then taking in the sites of ancient Mycenae and Corinth, and ending at the tourist-soaked but lovely island of Thira (a.k.a. Santorini).

Part II of our Hunan trip, this album features pictures of a 2000-year-old mummy's heart, ancient tombs and treasures, a giant lobster climbing the side of a building, and museums lovely and lowly. Don't miss it!

Museum Spree

As the year 2005 expired, so did our book of discount coupons for many of the museums and other sights in Beijing. So in the last days of the year we organized trips to as many museums as possible.

Summer Palace

The New Summer Palace is a complex of scenic buildings and bridges among lakes and hills. It was where the Imperial court would decamp to when it got too hot in the city. We were there when it was pretty cold, but it was still quite lovely.

Things from Outer Space!

A visit to the Ancient Observatory, the National Museum (with a *special appearance* of the Shenzhou 6 space capsule), and, best of all--a giant two-faced chicken.

Beijing's Nationalities Park

China's population is more than 90% Han Chinese; the other 10% is made up of many small ethnic groups. The Nationalities Park is a large Disney-like place dedicated to the celebration of China's multicultural diversity. As someone more clever than I described it, it's kind of like a zoo for minorities.

Penn historians of science at IHNS, Beijing61 viewsDrs. Cho, Vetter, and Sun at the lovely old courtyard compound of the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences. In imperial China, the compound used to be the living quarters for a prince. Now it houses the Institute's offices, lecture halls, student dormitories, and library.mudmine
Babi? No--Ikebabi77 views(As in 'ikebana.') This poor little cluster of bamboo was left by the previous apartment occupant drying out on the window sill of the study. And, with no form of employment when he first arrived (and precious little employment still today), Babi was free to devote himself to other passtimes, such as attempting to nurse the bamboo back to green healthfulness.mudmine

Don and Jane act out at the theater at Delphi43 viewsDelphi wasn't all about the Oracle, as it turns out. There was lots of other stuff for locals and visitors to do. In addition to the theater, there was also a stadium a little higher up the hill. It's said that for three months of the year, Apollo left Delphi and the god of wine and revelry, Dionysus (Bacchus to the Romans), took over. mudmine
Museum of Cham Sculpture62 viewsMost of the artifacts in the Museum of Cham Sculpture were taken from the ruins at My Son, which we later visited. It seems a shame to leave the ruined buildings at My Son (pronounced mee sun) bereft of their art, but I suppose it is easier to preserve in the museum, and probably more people get to see them in the city of Danang than would see them at the remote My Son site.mudmine
Vase-shaped doorway45 viewsI don't know much about classical gardens, but one of the things I picked up from my time teaching in Suzhou (the city famed for its gardens and canals) is that the art of the Chinese garden is in part the art of creating the perfect aperture. Unlike western gardens such as the Tuileries, a Chinese garden does not boast grand vistas, large lawns or beds of flowers rolling out as far as the eye can see. You should never be able to see the whole garden, I was told. Instead, the garden should be a series of intimate spaces with just a hint of what lies beyond-- glimpsed through a latticed window, or a vase-shaped door.mudmine
